We grew up in Durban, on the East Coast of South Africa.
When we were kids our dad owned a grocery store and a lot of our childhood was spent there. But of all the fond memories we have of that little shop, there's one that'll stick with us forever - the smell of freshly made biltong.
But once we moved to North America, we couldn't find biltong anywhere, and if you have had biltong before you know - jerky just isn't the same.
After craving it for years we knew we had to bring our favorite beef snack to USA, and that’s when Bull & Cleaver was born. Daniel started the business with his wife in 2014 and brought in his brother and parents to help out too.
Since then, we’ve been perfecting the art of making the best, most authentic biltong this side of Cape Town.

All of our biltong is, made with the same natural methods and family recipe we've been using for generations. A full slab of steak is marinated in a traditional blend of spices and vinegar. Dried slowly to maintain their mouth-watering flavour. The result? Tender biltong with unforgettable taste.

What's the difference between biltong and beef jerky?
Biltong is a dried beef snack that’s traditionally made in South Africa. Unlike beef jerky, our biltong is made with simple ingredients and without any sugar, artificial preservatives or additives. Beef jerky is made by dehydrating thinly sliced pieces of beef over hours, whereas our biltong is made by air drying a slab of steak over weeks. This leads to a fresher product with superior flavor, texture and nutritional profile.
Why is biltong more expensive than beef jerky?
You’re paying for quality. First and foremost, we only finely cuts beef and whole spices, rather than cheaper cuts and artificial flavors/preservatives. Secondly, jerky is dehydrated in 6 hours, whereas biltong can take up to 14 days to dry, losing more than half its weight during that process, meaning we need more beef per ounce than jerky. The end result is a more tender, higher protein snack that is free from sugar or chemicals. It’s well worth it if you ask us.
When is the best time to eat Biltong
Because of its nutritional profile, biltong is the perfect high-protein, no-carb snack for road trips, hiking, after the gym, the office or even late at night. It’s an easy way to eat healthy on the go. In saying that, many of our customers absolutely love it and find themselves pairing it with their favorite craft beer, regularly adding it to their salads, sandwiches and charcuterie boards.
What happens if I don’t like biltong?
We’re pretty sure you're going to love it, but if you’re not blown away, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org within 30 days of your purchase to request a refund. We can only offer refunds for your first try at a new flavor, however, we suggest ordering our Taster Pack first so you can discover your favorite flavor and order it to your heart's (and taste buds') desire!

Yes! All orders over $29 in the USA get free shipping. Orders placed before 4pm EST Monday - Friday are shipped out the same day. Average shipping time is about 2-5 business days.
